How does smart metering work, the modern solution for digitizing gas networks

The digitization of gas networks is becoming increasingly common, driven by efficiency requirements and ever stricter European regulations, and one of the key solutions in this process is smart metering. This involves the use of intelligent meters that enable continuous automatic monitoring of consumption and more efficient management of energy infrastructure.

These systems provide a clear picture of real-time consumption, helping operators quickly identify losses, reduce costs, and increase safety in network operations. At the same time, the digitization of metering contributes to the transition toward a more sustainable energy system.

In traditional systems, meter readings are taken manually, usually once a month. During this interval, potential leaks or losses may go undetected, leading to additional costs and reduced network efficiency. Through smart metering, data is collected automatically and transmitted to a digital platform.

Operators can analyze consumption almost in real time and quickly identify anomalies such as unusual fluctuations, pressure drops, or losses. The systems operate through devices mounted on meters that transmit information to an online platform accessible via the cloud. Analyzing this data enables rapid intervention and more efficient network management.

At the European level, smart metering is a strategic direction

The European Union has set a target to reduce energy consumption by 11.7% over the next five years, with the digitization of infrastructure being a central element of this goal. Through the legislative initiative Fit for 55, Europe is promoting the digitalization of gas networks and the implementation of smart solutions, thereby supporting the transition to a more reliable and sustainable energy system. The results have already started to show: while in 2023 approximately 45% of customers used smart meters, it is estimated that by 2028 the number of installed units will exceed 77 million. The European countries with the highest volumes of smart meters installed are Italy, France, Belgium, and the United Kingdom.

Where does Romania stand?

In Romania, the digitization of the gas sector is developing, but at a slower pace compared to Western Europe. Nevertheless, smart metering projects are becoming increasingly common, in line with European modernization trends.

Homplex has already implemented such solutions in several localities, including Malu (Ialomița), Rășinari (Sibiu), Panciu (Vrancea), Dofteana (Bacău), Călimănești (Vâlcea), Baru (Hunedoara), Dărmănești (Bacău).

Another example is the commune of Bujoreni (Vâlcea), where homes have been equipped with modern meter cabinets, prepared for the integration of smart metering solutions.

Solutions Developed by Homplex

Homplex develops smart metering solutions that store data in a centralized system, accessible through an intuitive web platform. The system automatically transmits meter readings, eliminating the need for manual monthly gas meter readings. Additionally, operators can analyze consumption history, make informed decisions, and optimize relationships with suppliers based on real data. The company offers solutions for both the industrial and residential sectors, developing Internet-connected products designed and manufactured in Romania. The platform has a modular architecture, allowing adaptation to different types of networks and operational requirements.

Platforma Homplex

An important element of the infrastructure is represented by composite enclosures, used for installing smart meters. These enclosures are durable, do not interfere with radio transmissions, and provide high mechanical protection. To date, Homplex has supplied over 100,000 devices of this category nationwide.

The adoption of smart metering represents a crucial step in modernizing Romania’s gas networks. Through real-time monitoring, loss reduction, and increased transparency, these solutions help optimize consumption and enhance safety. As digitalization progresses, smart meters will become a standard component of the energy infrastructure. Through its developed and implemented projects, Homplex actively contributes to the digital transformation of the gas sector and the creation of a more efficient and safer energy system.
